FAQs

Do black paving slabs get hot in the sun?

Dark surfaces absorb more heat than pale ones, so a black patio will feel warmer underfoot on a hot day. In a UK summer this is rarely a problem, but it is worth thinking about if children or a dog will be out on the patio barefoot in July. Shade from a pergola, a tree or nearby planting brings the surface temperature down quickly.

Will black paving fade over time?

Porcelain holds its colour well. The pigment runs through the body of the tile and is fired at high temperature, so strong sunlight has very little effect on it. Natural stone behaves differently. Kota black limestone weathers gradually and often lightens a shade or two as the surface ages, which some people prefer. Sealing slows that down and keeps the tone closer to how it looked when it was laid.

Should I choose porcelain or natural stone black paving slabs?

Porcelain is dense, absorbs almost no water and needs no sealing, so it stays clean with very little effort. It also comes in larger formats with crisp, uniform edges, which suits a modern layout. Kota black limestone is a natural material, so there is more variation from slab to slab and a softer, more traditional finish. It costs less per square metre but wants sealing and slightly more upkeep.

What is the difference between black and anthracite?

Anthracite is a very dark grey, usually with a hint of blue or brown depending on the range. True black is flatter and deeper. Side by side the difference is clear, on its own much less so. Anthracite tends to sit more comfortably alongside grey render, aluminium windows and composite decking. If you are matching existing materials, order samples and look at them outside in daylight.
