What is walling stone?

Walling stone is natural stone quarried and cut into smaller blocks for building with, rather than into flat slabs for laying underfoot. It's used for garden walls, raised beds, boundaries and decorative features. Because it's real stone, colour and texture vary piece to piece, which is what stops a finished wall looking like a fence panel made of concrete.

What's the difference between natural walling stone and concrete walling blocks?

Concrete and reconstituted blocks are moulded and pigmented, so the same face repeats every few blocks and the colour is a surface layer rather than the material itself. They're cheaper and quicker, and for a purely functional wall that's fine. Natural stone costs more and takes longer to lay, but the variation is genuine and it holds its appearance as it weathers instead of dulling off.

How is walling stone sold, and how much do I need?

It's sold by weight, in 200kg bundles weighed on calibrated scales, and each bundle covers approximately 1m² of wall face. Multiply the length of your wall by its height to get the face area in square metres, then add around 10% for cuts and waste. If the wall will have two finished faces, allow for both.

What can I build with walling stone?

Garden walls, raised beds, low boundary walls, seating walls, planters, steps and decorative features. It also works as a facing on an existing blockwork wall, which is a common way to get a stone look on a structure that's already up.
