Patio Kits & Mixed Size Patio Packs

A patio pack is a mix of paving slabs in four different sizes, supplied in set proportions that lay together in a repeating pattern. You'll see the same thing sold as a patio kit, a project pack or a paving set. They all mean the same thing.

The point of buying this way is that you don't have to work out how many of each size you need, or plan the layout yourself. The mix is already worked out.

Our patio packs contain four sizes: 900x600mm, 600x600mm, 600x290mm and 290x290mm, at 22mm thick with a tolerance of plus or minus 5mm.

This is a different mix to our single size slabs, which come in 900x600, 600x600, 600x450 and 600x300. If you're matching a pack to slabs you already have down, check the sizes before ordering, because the two ranges don't line up.

You order by the square metre rather than by a fixed pack size. Measure the length and width of your patio, multiply them together, and enter that figure in the coverage box on the product page. It works out the quantity for you.

Add 10 to 15% on top of your measured area. That covers cutting at the edges, the occasional slab that breaks, and any awkward corners. There's a tick box on the product page that adds 10% for you.

If your patio is a straightforward rectangle, 10% is usually enough. If there's a lot of shaping around beds, steps or a shed base, go to 15%. It's worth erring high. Running short on natural stone is more of a problem than having a few spare.

The four sizes are proportioned so they lay in a pattern that repeats across the area. You set it out once, then carry the same arrangement across the patio. If you're working to a size that suits the pattern you'll have very little cutting to do.

Before anything goes down on mortar, set the slabs out dry across the whole area. Natural stone varies in colour from slab to slab, and laying it out first lets you spread the darker and lighter pieces around rather than ending up with them bunched in one corner. Sealing is optional. It isn't needed for the stone to perform, but it makes the patio easier to keep clean and helps with staining from fallen leaves, barbecue grease and metal furniture.

If you do seal, wait until the patio has been laid, jointed and dried out properly. Sealing damp stone traps the moisture underneath.
