FAQs

How many small paving slabs do I need per square metre?

You do not need to work it out. Every product page lets you enter the area you want to cover in square metres, the length of a run in linear metres, or a straight number of slabs, and it converts as you type. Tick the box to add an extra 10 percent for cuts and breakages before you add to basket. If you want to sanity check the figure, a square metre takes 3.7 slabs at 600 x 450 or 5.6 slabs at 600 x 300, so a 15 square metre patio in 600 x 450 comes to around 61 slabs once waste is included.

What is the difference between 600 x 450 and 600 x 300?

600 x 450 is the better all-rounder for a small patio or seating area, because it covers ground faster while still being easy to handle. 600 x 300 is a long, narrow format that suits paths, borders and edging courses, and it is the one to choose if you want a brick-style bond or a linear look. Plenty of projects use both, with 600 x 450 for the patio and 600 x 300 running as a border or a path off it.

Can I mix small slabs with larger sizes?

Yes, and it is one of the better ways to handle a bigger area without it feeling flat. Our patio packs come as mixed sizes in a single stone, so the colour stays consistent while the pattern varies. You can also use small slabs deliberately as a border, a change of direction, or a band between two larger areas. The one thing to get right is thickness: mixing sizes only works cleanly if everything is calibrated to the same depth, otherwise you are chasing levels across the whole patio.

How thick are they, and what base do they need?

Both small sizes are calibrated to 22mm, so they sit level with each other without packing. They want a proper foundation: a compacted MOT type 1 sub base, then a full mortar bed rather than dabs or spots, which is what causes slabs to rock and crack later. Laying them straight onto soil or sand is a common shortcut and it is why so many patios need relaying after a couple of winters. Small formats are no more forgiving here than large ones.
