FAQs

What is Kandla Grey Indian sandstone?

Kandla Grey is a natural Indian sandstone quarried in Rajasthan, named after the port it's traditionally shipped from. It has a soft, mid-grey base with subtle variation running through each slab, from cooler silver tones to warmer beige and brown veining. The stone is hand-dressed on the edges and riven on the surface, which gives it a textured, non-slip finish that works well in UK gardens all year round.

Is Kandla Grey suitable for UK weather?

Yes. Indian sandstone is dense, frost-resistant and holds up well to British winters when laid correctly on a full mortar bed. The colour can darken slightly when wet, which is normal and part of the appeal of natural stone. We'd recommend sealing it after installation to protect against staining, but it isn't strictly required for the stone itself to perform.

Does Kandla Grey sandstone need sealing?

Sealing is optional but recommended. Indian sandstone is naturally porous, so a sealer helps repel oil, food, leaf tannins and general garden grime, and makes future cleaning much easier. Wait until the stone is fully dry after installation (usually 4 to 6 weeks, longer in wet weather) before applying a breathable sealer designed for sandstone.

How do I clean Kandla Grey sandstone?

For regular maintenance, sweep loose debris and wash down with warm water and a stiff brush. For deeper cleans, use a pH-neutral patio cleaner rather than bleach or acid-based products, which can damage the stone and strip its colour. Jet washing is fine on a low to medium setting, held at an angle and around 30cm from the surface so you don't blast out the jointing.
