Quarried in India, this classic limestone has a smooth, refined surface that creates a clean, modern finish while still retaining the character of real natural stone.

Naturally lighter in its unsealed state, Kota Black deepens in colour when sealed, enhancing the richness of its charcoal tones and adding extra depth to patios, pathways and landscaped areas. The natural variation within the stone ensures every installation feels unique while maintaining a consistent, contemporary appearance.

Durable and well suited to outdoor environments, Kota Black limestone performs beautifully in a wide range of garden styles, from sleek modern designs to traditional layouts seeking a darker contrast. FAQs

What does Kota Black limestone look like?

Kota Black is a natural Indian limestone with a charcoal grey to deep black tone and a smooth, fine-grained surface. In its natural unsealed state, the colour reads as a softer mid to dark grey with subtle tonal variation across the slabs. Once sealed or wet, the stone deepens significantly, pulling out the rich charcoal and near-black tones that the range is known for. Compared to riven Indian sandstone, the surface is much smoother and more refined.

Why does Kota Black look lighter than expected when it arrives?

This is normal. Dry, unsealed limestone naturally appears lighter and slightly chalky compared to how it looks finished. Once the stone is laid, jointed and sealed, or simply wet from rain, the deep charcoal colour comes through fully. If you want the dark, contemporary finish straight away, sealing after installation is the way to get there.

Is Kota Black limestone suitable for UK weather?

Yes. Kota Black is dense, durable and frost-resistant, and performs well outdoors year-round when laid correctly on a full mortar bed. It's well suited to British gardens and handles repeated freeze-thaw cycles without issue. As with all natural stone, the colour will deepen when wet.

Does Kota Black limestone need sealing?

Sealing is strongly recommended for Kota Black, more so than for sandstone, for two reasons. First, it enhances and locks in the rich charcoal colour the range is known for. Second, limestone is more sensitive to acidic substances like wine, vinegar and lemon juice than sandstone, so a sealer adds an important layer of protection. Wait until the stone is fully dry after installation (usually 4 to 6 weeks, longer in damp weather) and use a breathable, colour-enhancing sealer made for limestone.

How do I clean Kota Black limestone?

Use warm water and a stiff brush for routine cleaning, with a pH-neutral patio cleaner for anything heavier. Avoid acidic cleaners (anything containing vinegar, lemon, or patio cleaners labelled "acid-based" or "brick acid"), as these will etch the surface and dull the finish. Bleach should also be avoided. Jet washing is fine on a low to medium setting, held at an angle and around 30cm from the surface so you don't blow out the jointing or damage the smoother limestone surface.
