FAQs

What makes Modello Black different from the other porcelain ranges?

Modello Black is manufactured in Italy in the premium tier of our porcelain ranges, alongside Masso Grey. The Italian manufacturing is recognised for tighter colour consistency, sharper rectified edges, and refined stone-effect detail. You'll notice this in the paving price (£21.50 per slab vs £12-14 for the Cathedral and Quartz ranges), but the trade-off is a more refined finish that holds up particularly well in contemporary, high-end garden designs where dark porcelain is doing a lot of the visual work.

What does Modello Black porcelain look like?

Modello Black has a deep charcoal to near-black base with subtle stone-style movement across the surface. The dark base reads as rich and sophisticated rather than flat black, with enough variation to feel natural rather than synthetic. It works particularly well as a contrast against light fencing, render, or planting, and as a sleek backdrop for modern garden furniture. Because it's porcelain, the colour stays consistent slab to slab rather than varying like natural stone.

What's the difference between Modello Black porcelain and Kota Black limestone?

Despite both being dark stones, these are very different products. Kota Black is natural Indian limestone, quarried and finished with a smooth, fine-grained surface. It needs sealing to bring out the rich charcoal colour and protect against staining, and it's slightly acid-sensitive. Modello Black is manufactured porcelain, non-porous, sealed for life from the factory, and doesn't need any maintenance beyond routine cleaning. The choice tends to come down to whether you want the character of real stone (Kota Black) or the low-maintenance consistency of porcelain (Modello Black).

Does porcelain paving need sealing?

No. This is one of the main practical advantages of porcelain over natural stone. Porcelain is vitrified and non-porous, so liquids sit on the surface rather than soaking in. You don't need to seal it after installation and you don't need to re-seal it every few years like sandstone or limestone. Jointing compound still needs to be applied properly, but the slabs themselves require no sealing.
