FAQs

What Is Porcelain Paving made from?

Porcelain paving is created by baking a mixture of clay, sand and other minerals. These are then put into a high-temperature kiln. From this, an incredibly durable and non-porous material is created; known as porcelain paving.

How does Porcelain Paving compare to Natural Stone?

No one can deny the beauty of natural stone paving. However, here at Primethorpe Paving, we genuinely believe that porcelain paving is an even more appealing and longer-lasting paving option.

We feel that porcelain flags boast characteristics that make them superior to natural stone, for indoor or outdoor installation. Unlike natural stone, porcelain paving slabs require minimal maintenance. They are moisture-resistant without sealant, and they don’t impact the environment as much as natural stone paving either.

How do I lay Porcelain Paving?

Porcelain paving needs to be laid on a full mortar bed using a porcelain-specific primer or slurry to help it bond properly. Unlike natural stone, porcelain doesn't absorb water, so standard methods won't work. See our porcelain paving laying guide for more information.

How do I maintain and clean Porcelain Paving?

Porcelain is one of the easiest paving materials to look after. It doesn't need sealing and won't stain easily, so a regular sweep and an occasional wash with soapy water is usually enough to keep it looking good. For tougher marks, a pressure washer on a low setting works well.

Is Porcelain Paving slippery?

Outdoor porcelain paving tiles are designed to be non-slip, with a textured surface that provides grip even when wet. All our porcelain has an R11 anti-slip rating, which makes it safe for patios, paths, and areas around pools.
