| Country of Origin | Brazil |
| Thickness Options | 20mm + 30mm, |
| Dimensional Tolerance | All dimensions are cut to size with a manufacturing tolerance of ±5 mm. |
| Colour Description | Mid- to dark grey base with subtle blue-grey and charcoal tones, plus occasional softer greenish or graphite shading. |
| Surface Finish | Riven natural split finish with gently texture; smooth and textured areas will vary between pieces. |
| Edge Finishing Notes | All edges are precision machine-cut and then hand-sanded if needed. Due to the natural structure of slate sanding marks, slight tonal variations along the edges and occasional tiny micro-chips may be visible. |
| Natural Variation | Medium to high variation in tone, shading and riven height, typical of slate. |
| Weight | Approx. 70–140 kg per m² depending on thickness. |
| Density | Approx. 2,700–2,800 kg per m³. |
| Technical Characteristics | |
| Heat Absorption / Retention | Good thermal mass, absorbing heat efficiently and releasing it steadily. |
| Maximum Temperature Resistance | Typically performs safely up to approx. 450–500 °C before risk of thermal shock. Hearth must not be in direct contact with an open flame. |
| Compressive Strength | Approx. 200–280 MPa |
| Flexural Strength | Approx. 45–60 MPa. |
| Porosity | Low to medium. |
| Water Absorption | Approx. 0.2–0.6% (low water absorption typical of Brazilian slate). |
| Thermal Conductivity | Approx. 2.0–2.5 W/mK. |
| Chemical Sensitivity | Generally resistant to weak household acids; prolonged contact with strong acids may cause surface lightening or dulling. |
| Stain Resistance | Moderate in its natural state — significantly improved with a suitable penetrating or enhancing sealer. |
| Salt Sensitivity | Low; Brazilian slate is naturally dense and resistant to salt-related deterioration. |
| Natural Characteristics of Brazilian Grey Slate | |
| General Nature of the Stone | Brazilian grey slate is a natural metamorphic stone that splits along cleft layers to form its riven surface. This process creates natural height variation, subtle undulations and occasional more pronounced ridges. Differences in texture, tone and shading are expected and form part of the stone’s authentic character. |
| Colour Profile – “Grey Slate” | Sold as “grey slate,” this material typically shows a range from mid- to dark grey with blue-grey and charcoal notes. Some pieces may exhibit gentle greenish or graphite undertones. It is not a flat, single-tone grey; instead, soft tonal shifts and natural movement create a more organic, layered appearance. |
| Colour Patches & Mineral Movement | Natural mineral distribution within the slate can create lighter and darker areas, cloudy patches or subtle streaking across the surface. These features are not faults and do not affect performance, they are part of what gives each hearth its unique, natural look. |
| Riven Surface Texture | The riven finish is created when the stone is split along its natural cleft. No two hearths will be identical. Some faces will be relatively smooth with gentle ripples, while others may display more pronounced cleft lines or localised ridges. This variation is characteristic of genuine riven slate and contributes to its rustic appeal. |
| Pyrite / Fools Gold | Pyrite may occur as small metallic gold or bronze specks within the stone. It is a naturally occurring mineral and can also appear on cut edges where internal deposits are exposed. Isolated pyrite spots are not considered defects and do not affect the structural integrity of the hearth. |
| Production Enhancements | Where necessary, we may use epoxy fillers, localised smoothing, edge refinement or colour-enhancing treatments to improve the final appearance and consistency of the hearth. These are normal parts of our finishing process and are not regarded as faults or indicators of a lower-grade material. |
| Application & Packaging | |
| Suitable For | Fire hearths, stove bases, fireplace hearths, chamber floors, inglenooks and internal stone features. |
| Application | Internal use. |
| Sealing | Sealing is strongly recommended to help reduce marking, enhance the natural colour and improve resistance to staining and everyday spills. |
| Installation Notes | Install on a stable, level and load-bearing substrate. Allow for movement due to temperature changes. The hearth should not be in direct contact with open flame. Always use adhesives, grouts and sealers suitable for natural stone. |
| Packaging | Supplied on wooden pallets or in wooden crates with appropriate protective layers to minimise the risk of damage during transit. |
| Availability | Cut-to-size hearths available in 20mm and 30mm thicknesses, subject to order requirements and current stock levels. |
FAST UK DELIVERY — PRICED FAIRLY AND TRANSPARENTLY
We believe delivery should be clear, honest, and consistent. That’s why we don’t advertise “free delivery” while quietly building the cost into product prices or adding unexpected surcharges later in the checkout.
Instead, we charge delivery separately and transparently, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for, and so customers who order smaller quantities aren’t unfairly subsidising larger deliveries.
We deliver across the UK, including the Scottish Highlands & Isles, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man.
WHY WE DON’T OFFER “FREE DELIVERY”
There’s no such thing as truly free delivery — the cost has to be covered somewhere. Some retailers do this by:
- Increasing product prices to absorb delivery costs, or
- Adding extra charges at checkout (often based on delivery size/weight or certain postcodes)
Our approach is simple:
- Product prices stay product prices.
- Delivery is shown clearly and charged based on what it actually costs to send your order safely and on time.
DELIVERY CALCULATIONS
Delivery is calculated based on factors such as:
- Order size and weight
- The type of goods being shipped
- Delivery method (parcel, courier, pallet)
- Delivery location within the UK
You’ll always see the delivery cost clearly before you pay — simply enter your postcode at checkout and your delivery options will appear.
DISPATCH & DELIVERY TIMES
We aim to dispatch orders as quickly as possible, usually within 1–2 working days (subject to stock and order volume).
Delivery times vary depending on your location and the delivery method selected.
If your order is urgent, please contact us and we’ll do our best to help.
COLLECTION FROM OUR PETERBOROUGH DEPOT (PRIMETHORPE PAVING)

If you’re unsure about anything, contact us before ordering, we’re happy to advise.
