| Material Type | Natural sandstone |
| Category | Fire hearth slab / fireplace stone |
| Country of Origin | India |
| Thickness Options | 30mm and 50mm |
| Dimensional Tolerance | All dimensions are cut to size with a manufacturing tolerance of ±5 mm. |
| Colour Description | Mid to light grey with subtle tonal movement and natural grain. |
| Surface Finish | Natural riven / split surface with a gently textured finish. |
| Natural Variation | Medium to high variation in tone, shading and surface texture due to the natural layering and grain of the sandstone. |
| Edge Finishing Notes | All edges are precision machine-cut and then hand-sanded if needed. Due to the natural structure of sandstone, small sanding marks, slight tonal variations along the edges and occasional tiny micro-chips may be visible. |
| Weight | Approx. 70–120 kg per m² depending on thickness. |
| Density | Approx. 2,300–2,400 kg per m³. |
| Technical Characteristics | |
| Heat Absorption / Retention | High thermal mass, excellent heat absorption and steady heat dispersal. |
| Maximum Temperature Resistance | Typically performs safely up to approx. 300–400 °C before risk of thermal shock. Hearth must not be in direct contact with an open flame. |
| Compressive Strength | Approx. 80–120 MPa. |
| Flexural Strength | Approx. 7–12 MPa. |
| Porosity | Medium–high. |
| Water Absorption | Approx. 1–3%. |
| Thermal Conductivity | Approx. 2.0–3.0 W/mK. |
| Chemical Sensitivity | Generally more resistant to mild household acids than limestone, but prolonged contact with strong acids or aggressive cleaners may etch or lighten the surface. |
| Stain Resistance | Moderate; sealing is strongly recommended to reduce marking and improve resistance to staining. |
| Salt Sensitivity | Slight to moderate, as expected with natural sandstone; good ventilation and correct installation help reduce issues. |
| Natural Characteristics of Sandstone | |
| General Nature of the Stone | Kandla Grey Sandstone is a natural sedimentary stone formed from compacted sand and minerals over millions of years. Natural variations and features are part of its geological make-up and cannot be avoided or deemed as faults. These include tonal changes, layering, grain patterns and texture differences, all of which give the hearth its unique and authentic character. |
| Colour & Tonal Variation | The stone typically ranges from soft light grey through to mid grey, often with gentle banding, patches and shifts in tone. Some pieces may appear slightly warmer or cooler in shade. Selection and cutting aim to keep the overall look consistent, but variation between individual slabs and within a single hearth is normal. |
| Surface Texture & Grain | As a riven sandstone, the surface is created by naturally splitting the stone along its bedding planes. This can produce subtle riven ridges shallow indents and a gently uneven feel. |
| White / Pale Mineral Patches | Occasional lighter patches or streaks may appear where the stone contains slightly different mineral concentrations or tighter grain. These can show as soft pale bands, clouds or spots. They are natural features of Kandla Grey Sandstone and cannot be completely eliminated by selection. |
| Rust / Iron Spotting | Kandla Grey Sandstone can contain small amounts of iron-bearing minerals. When exposed to moisture and air, these may oxidise and appear as orange or brown “rust” spots, patches or halos on the surface or edges over time. This is a normal for grey sandstones and is not classed as a fault. |
| Production Enhancements | Where necessary we may use epoxy or stone filler, localised sanding, smoothing or colour-enhancing treatments to refine the appearance of the hearth surface and edges. These steps are part of our normal production process and are used to enhance the overall look of the product. They are not considered faults or signs of a lower grade material. |
| Hand-Dressed Edges | Hand-dressed edges are shaped in the quarry before the slabs are shipped to us. This process is carried out using traditional hammer-and-chisel methods to create a more rustic, natural appearance. Because this is a hand-finished technique rather than a precision machine process, natural variation should be expected. The finished edge may appear flatter in some areas and more pitched or angled in others. Some sections may be slightly rougher or more irregular, and occasional small chips or missing fragments can occur where the stone naturally fractures during dressing. These variations are completely normal for genuine hand-dressed sandstone and are not considered faults. We can only offer hand-dressed edges on three sides in a selection of fixed widths, typically 150cm, 120cm and 90cm. If you request a custom width outside these standard sizes, we will contact you to discuss options. In most cases we can offer either the front edge dressed only or give you the opportunity to amend your required size or choose an alternative edge type. |
| Application & Packaging | |
| Suitable For | Fire hearths, stove bases, fireplace hearths, chamber floors, inglenooks and internal stone features. |
| Application | Fire hearth. |
| Sealing | Sealing is recommended to reduce marking, limit water absorption and improve resistance to staining and everyday spills. |
| Installation Notes | Install on a level, load-bearing substrate and allow for expansion gaps due to changes in temperature. The hearth should not be in direct contact with open flame. Use suitable adhesives and sealers designed for natural stone. |
| Packaging | Supplied on wooden pallets or in wooden crates with appropriate protective layers. |
| Availability | Supplied in various sizes and cut-to-size hearths, subject to order requirements and stock. |
FAST UK DELIVERY — PRICED FAIRLY AND TRANSPARENTLY
We believe delivery should be clear, honest, and consistent. That’s why we don’t advertise “free delivery” while quietly building the cost into product prices or adding unexpected surcharges later in the checkout.
Instead, we charge delivery separately and transparently, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for, and so customers who order smaller quantities aren’t unfairly subsidising larger deliveries.
We deliver across the UK, including the Scottish Highlands & Isles, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man.
WHY WE DON’T OFFER “FREE DELIVERY”
There’s no such thing as truly free delivery — the cost has to be covered somewhere. Some retailers do this by:
- Increasing product prices to absorb delivery costs, or
- Adding extra charges at checkout (often based on delivery size/weight or certain postcodes)
Our approach is simple:
- Product prices stay product prices.
- Delivery is shown clearly and charged based on what it actually costs to send your order safely and on time.
DELIVERY CALCULATIONS
Delivery is calculated based on factors such as:
- Order size and weight
- The type of goods being shipped
- Delivery method (parcel, courier, pallet)
- Delivery location within the UK
You’ll always see the delivery cost clearly before you pay — simply enter your postcode at checkout and your delivery options will appear.
DISPATCH & DELIVERY TIMES
We aim to dispatch orders as quickly as possible, usually within 1–2 working days (subject to stock and order volume).
Delivery times vary depending on your location and the delivery method selected.
If your order is urgent, please contact us and we’ll do our best to help.
COLLECTION FROM OUR PETERBOROUGH DEPOT (PRIMETHORPE PAVING)
Collection is available from our Peterborough depot at Primethorpe Paving, Bungalow Business Park, PE6 7PP.
Please select the collection option at checkout (where available) or contact us to arrange a suitable time.
TRACKING & DELIVERY UPDATES
Where available, we’ll provide tracking details once your order has been dispatched.
ACCESS & DELIVERY RESTRICTIONS
To ensure a smooth delivery, please check:
- Access for large vehicles (if your order ships by pallet)
- That someone is available to receive the delivery
- Any site restrictions (narrow lanes, height limits, timed access, etc.)
If you’re unsure about anything, contact us before ordering, we’re happy to advise.
