The dark blue-black colouring makes them a great choice for both modern and traditional homes.
To keep costs down and delivery times as short as possible, our Express service focuses on straightforward cutting without additional finishing. Hearths are supplied unsealed, with standard factory-sawn edges and no decorative edge detailing, polishing or colour-enhancing treatments. They can be installed as supplied, or you can arrange further finishing on site if preferred.
If you're looking for something more bespoke, including custom shapes and a choice of decorative edge finishes, take a look at our Fully Customised Black Riven Slate Hearths.
As a natural riven stone, each hearth has its own individual colour and surface texture. Please refer to the Specification tab for further information about the stone's natural characteristics, appearance, installation and care.

| Product Specifications | |
|---|---|
| Product Details | |
| Material | Natural riven black slate, sourced from Brazil. |
| Thickness Options | 20mm, 30mm and 50mm. |
| Shape & Size | Square or rectangular hearths, machine-cut to your required dimensions. |
| Dimensional Tolerance | Length and width are machine-cut to your requested dimensions with a manufacturing tolerance of ±5mm. Natural variations in surface texture, thickness and flatness are to be expected. |
| Edge Finish | Standard factory-sawn edges only. No polishing, rounding, bullnosing or decorative edge detailing is included. Minor saw marks, edge-tone differences and small imperfections may be visible as part of this basic finish. |
| Supplied Finish | Supplied unsealed, with no additional polishing or colour-enhancing treatments. This straightforward finish keeps the cost down and production time to a minimum. |
| Approximate Weight | 20mm: 56–58kg/m² 30mm: 84–87kg/m² 50mm: 140–145kg/m²Approximate weights only. Actual weights may vary. |
| Natural Stone Characteristics | |
| Riven Surface | Riven slate has a naturally split surface rather than a smooth, polished finish. Some pieces may be relatively smooth, while others have more pronounced ridges, uneven areas and natural splits. The level of texture varies between individual hearths and is a normal characteristic of the stone. |
| Colour & Natural Markings | Black Slate has a predominantly blue-black appearance with natural charcoal, graphite and grey tones. Colour can vary from piece to piece, with some hearths appearing darker or lighter than others. Cloudy patches, streaks, shading differences and occasional mineral markings may also be present. |
| Product Photography | Product images are provided as a guide to the general appearance of the stone. Every hearth is unique, so the colour, riven texture, ridges and natural markings of the hearth supplied may differ from those shown. These natural variations are not, in themselves, product faults. |
| Fireplace Suitability & Installation | |
| Suitable For | Ideal for log burners, wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and traditional fireplaces. Slate is naturally heat-resistant and non-combustible, making it a popular choice for fireplace hearths. Sudden or extreme temperature changes should be avoided, as these can cause cracking. |
| Installation | Install on a flat, solid and properly supported surface. Always check that the hearth size and thickness are suitable for your stove or fireplace, following the manufacturer's installation guidance. |
| Expansion Gaps | Natural slate expands when heated and contracts as it cools. An expansion gap must be left wherever the hearth meets a wall, fireplace surround or other fixed surface. We recommend a 10mm gap, with a minimum of 5mm, to allow for natural movement. Failure to leave sufficient expansion gaps may result in stress and cracking of the stone. These gaps should be considered when measuring and ordering your hearth. If filling the gaps, use a suitable flexible sealant rather than rigid mortar or grout. We recommend our Mapei Mapesil AC Zero Flexible Silicone Sealant |
| On-Site Cutting | Hearths can be trimmed or adjusted on site using suitable stone-cutting tools. Cutting should be carried using appropriate safety equipment and dust control. |
| Care & Maintenance | |
| Sealing | Hearths are supplied unsealed to keep production time quick but it is advised to seal the hearth once installation is complete |
| Cleaning | Clean with a soft cloth or mop, warm water and a suitable natural stone cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, acidic cleaning products and abrasive materials. Unsealed slate may be more susceptible to staining from oils and liquids. |
| Ordering & Delivery | |
| Express Service | Our quickest and lowest-cost made-to-measure slate hearth service, designed for straightforward square or rectangular cutting without additional finishing or decorative edge detailing. |
| Express Delivery | Typically delivered within 3 working days, subject to order cut-off times, stock availability, production and delivery location. Delivery times are estimates and may vary. |
| Fully Customised Alternative | Looking for a more individual design? Our Fully Customised Black Riven Slate Hearths offer additional shaping and a choice of decorative edge finishes. |
FAST UK DELIVERY — PRICED FAIRLY AND TRANSPARENTLY
We believe delivery should be clear, honest, and consistent. That’s why we don’t advertise “free delivery” while quietly building the cost into product prices or adding unexpected surcharges later in the checkout.
Instead, we charge delivery separately and transparently, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for, and so customers who order smaller quantities aren’t unfairly subsidising larger deliveries.
We deliver across the UK, including the Scottish Highlands & Isles, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man.
WHY WE DON’T OFFER “FREE DELIVERY”
There’s no such thing as truly free delivery — the cost has to be covered somewhere. Some retailers do this by:
- Increasing product prices to absorb delivery costs, or
- Adding extra charges at checkout (often based on delivery size/weight or certain postcodes)
Our approach is simple:
- Product prices stay product prices.
- Delivery is shown clearly and charged based on what it actually costs to send your order safely and on time.
DELIVERY CALCULATIONS
Delivery is calculated based on factors such as:
- Order size and weight
- The type of goods being shipped
- Delivery method (parcel, courier, pallet)
- Delivery location within the UK
You’ll always see the delivery cost clearly before you pay — simply enter your postcode at checkout and your delivery options will appear.
DISPATCH & DELIVERY TIMES
We aim to dispatch orders as quickly as possible, usually within 1–2 working days (subject to stock and order volume).
Delivery times vary depending on your location and the delivery method selected.
If your order is urgent, please contact us and we’ll do our best to help.
COLLECTION FROM OUR PETERBOROUGH DEPOT (PRIMETHORPE PAVING)
Collection is available from our Peterborough depot at Primethorpe Paving, Bungalow Business Park, PE6 7PP.
Please select the collection option at checkout (where available) or contact us to arrange a suitable time.
TRACKING & DELIVERY UPDATES
Where available, we’ll provide tracking details once your order has been dispatched.
ACCESS & DELIVERY RESTRICTIONS
To ensure a smooth delivery, please check:
- Access for large vehicles (if your order ships by pallet)
- That someone is available to receive the delivery
- Any site restrictions (narrow lanes, height limits, timed access, etc.)
If you’re unsure about anything, contact us before ordering, we’re happy to advise.

Perfect for my electric fire. I was very happy with the product but beware they are very heavy so you might need help moving it. Mine was the small size so goodness knows how heavy a large one would be.
From the initial order picking out the size I wanted to the confirmation email and the ease of picking a delivery date. The phone call within a couple of days to say that the item was already and palleted ready for delivery and would I want to move the delivery up, so item was delivered five days earlier than original order in wonderful condition very well packed beautifully cut size and looks stunning in place.
